*Frequently Asked Questions

What does Casa El Pío mean?

El Pío Pío means chirp, as in the noise that a bird makes. For aesthetic reasons (the owners are a graphic designer and a hair stylist), the moniker was shortened to Casa El Pío. It’s not grammatically correct but we like the way it looks.

Why do I have to pay for my entire stay up front?

Unlike large hotels that can handle last minute cancellations, we are a small business of four rooms. Our survival depends on your arrival. We appreciate your trust.

How can my family get in touch with me when I am there?

While you are here we can provide you with a cell phone for a US$50 deposit. Calling cards are available at numerous retailers around the island.

Do I need to rent a car?

Not really. Once you arrive on the island you won’t need a car. If you want to leave the downtown area, you have the choice of a few modes of transportation: taxi, golf cart or bus. The first option varies from US$1.50 to US$12 in cost, depending where you want to go. Golf carts cost no more than US$60 a day and provide the most flexibility.

Do I need to bring cash?

You can exchange your cash for Mexican pesos at either the bank or at one of the Hidalgo Avenue windows that claim not to take commission. There are also two HSBC bank ATM machines within 5 minutes walking distance from Casa El Pío.

What do I need to pack?

We provide all your linens, including two beach towels, soap and shampoo. The rest is up to you: your passport, sunscreen, a bathing suit, sunglasses, toiletries, enough clothes and underwear to get you through half of your stay (getting laundry done here is about 50 cents a pound: it comes back to you dried and folded in a plastic bag, and it smells wonderful.)

Is there going to be a safe place to put my valuables?

All the rooms have wall-mounted safes, where you can fit the basics: passport, Rolex, cash. We will show you how to program a code that you will remember.

Is there going to be housekeeping?

Yes, everyday except Sunday when our staff takes a day of rest.

Do I have to speak Spanish?

Le ayudaría, pero no es obligatorio. Most of the restaurants and commonly tourist-frequented businesses here employ people who speak enough English to get you what you need. In addition, Margaret, the property manager at Casa El Pío, is a native English speaker and also speaks both Spanish and German. She will be happy to help you in any way she can, should you need to communicate beyond the basic, tourist context.

Is there a kitchen in my room?

No. There is a 6-cup coffeemaker, a small fridge, two spoons, two mugs and a knife/cutting board. That’s it.

Why isn’t my question answered above?

Because you’re the first to ask it. Write to us at hola@casaelpio.com and we will be happy to help you.
